Standing proudly above Llyn Padarn, Castell Dolbadarn was built in the late 12th or early 13th century. Rising 50 feet high, this solitary stone tower offers sweeping views of Eryri (Snowdonia) and remains a powerful symbol of Welsh resilience and medieval heritage.

There are three different car parks to choose from, depending on where in Llanberis you’d like to start and how far you’d like to walk.

🚶‍♀️ We began at Ger Y Llyn Car Park, which served as our starting point.
🅿️ The second option is Parc Padarn Car Park, which brings you to the opposite side of the Castell Dolbadarn entrance.
🅿️ The third choice is the car park next to the National Slate Museum, ideal if you’d like to explore more of the local heritage while you’re there.

This walk is not pram friendly.

From Ger Y Llyn Car Park, begin your walk by heading alongside the road towards the bus stops, then turn left and cross over the road. Continue straight ahead — you’ll spot Parc Padarn Car Park on your left, and soon after on your right, you should see a sign with a castle icon. That’s your cue to turn right.

You’ll walk over a small bridge with lovely views of the river. Keep an eye out for kissing gates along the way. The path becomes a little rocky and uneven, but it’s very much doable for most. Continue until you come across a small shelter building — if memory serves me right, there might be a bench inside to rest for a moment (but don’t quote me on that!).

From there, you’ll get your first proper look at Castell Dolbadarn. Just follow the path all the way up to the castle — take your time and enjoy the scenery.

🏞 My Personal Thoughts

I have such fond memories of Castell Dolbadarn. My dad used to take my brother and me here for little adventures, and it quickly became one of my favourite places to visit.

The walk is pretty easy and family-friendly, suitable for all fitness levels. I’ve marked it as moderate simply because of the uneven rocky section near the top of the castle. Whether it feels easy or a bit challenging will depend on your confidence. But overall, it’s a lovely, rewarding walk. Overall, it’s a lovely place to visit – especially with kids.
